In 1926, paranormal investigator Sarah Jewell and her travelling companion, Marie-Thrse LaFleur, are summoned to the home of Sarah's childhood friend Lilian Makepeace Whelstone as she is about to auction off her late husband's occult collection. When they arrive, Sarah and Marie-Thrse learn that Lilian's lawyer, Mr. Severin, has been murdered in a locked room. A storm has knocked out any possibility of communicating with the authorities, and the buyers are some of those on a long list of suspects. This story evokes feelings of Agatha Christie with plucky and likeable heroines, and although there is a paranormal bent, fans looking for mysteries based in realism will not be disappointed. The illustrations are atmospheric, with the style reflecting the time period, but the most extraordinary art is a double-page spread depicting the interior of the house. While this story stands alone, readers may recognize Sarah and Marie-Thrse from previous Mike Mignola-created series, including Hellboy. Sarah Jewell and Marie-Thrse LaFleur's characters will appeal to teens as well as adults; this may be the rare title that appeals to both cozy mystery and horror readers.
