Anise can't wait to spend the summer before her senior year surfing and hanging out on the beach with friends. Santa Cruz is more than her home-it's her heart. But when her aunt is in a serious car accident, Anise must say goodbye to California to go help care for her three young cousins in Nebraska-the last place Anise wants to be. As much as she loves her family, it's hard to put her past behind her when she's living in the childhood house of the mother who abandoned her. But then she meets Lincoln, a charismatic, one-armed skater who challenges her to swap her surfboard for a skateboard, and she discovers that sometimes the only way to find your footing is to let go.

Narrator Laurence Bouvard has the voice of surfer-girl Anise down pat. The summer before her senior year finds her looking forward to surfing, partying, and hanging out with her friends on the beach--until a family emergency sends her and her father to Nebraska to help out when her aunt is seriously injured. Anise sounds confident and self-absorbed yet often unable to be honest and open with friends and family. She has the singsong voice girls of that age use, making everything seem sooo important and exciting. Most of the other characters' voices are appropriate to their ages and cultures, except Lincoln, who sounds much older than a recent high school graduate. The overuse of expletives cheapens the story. N.E.M. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine
