In addition to featuring illuminating reflections on the genre of historical fiction by novelists Brayfield (Wild Weekend) and Sprott (The Ptolemies), this title includes contributions by such luminaries as Margaret Atwood, Philippa Gregory, Hilary Mantel, and Orhan Pamuk. Brayfield and Sprott are at their best as they introduce the genre, discuss its history, consider the freedoms and constraints it provides, and reflect on the pains and pleasures of the research that informs the work. As with most superlative guides, this one reads like an engaging conversation rather than a lesson. The material assumes some knowledge on the part of the reader so that those who don't know the difference between third-person limited and third-person omniscient, for example, won't learn it here and should turn to manuals by John Gardner (The Art of Fiction) before tackling this volume. But for the aspiring historical novelist, this book offers substantial rewards. The work concludes with practical advice on how to go about conducting research for historical fiction. VERDICT A valuable resource for ambitious historical fiction writers everywhere.--Paul Stenis, Pepperdine Univ. Lib., Malibu, CA
