      Bond (Mr. and Mrs. Witch) sketches out a slow-paced art heist in this flawed romantasy. Magical master art forger Dani Poissant has been on the outs with the secret world of magical thieves in which she grew up since she turned in her famous art thief mother, Maria, to the FBI when she was 17. Now Maria’s mysterious former partner, Archer, offers Dani the chance to reconcile with her mother and get back to her old life in her old home if Dani will steal a portrait of Archer from the soon to be auctioned Hackworth Collection kept in “the Fortress of Art,” a place “tougher to get into than Fort Knox.” Dani accepts, going undercover as a security guard and managing to win over her mother’s old team. Along the way, however, she realizes there’s much more to Archer, and his portrait, than meets the eye. What should be a snappy, tightly plotted narrative gets bogged down by an unconvincing love triangle between Dani and the barely sketched out characters of Brad Hackworth, the personalityless heir of the Hackworth Collection, and Elliot, a fellow magical criminal, as well as overwrought excerpts from an 1890s journal written by Dani’s ancestor. Readers looking for excitement will have to find it elsewhere. Agent: Kate McKean, Howard Morhaim Literary.

McManus uses a gentle Southern accent as Dani heads home to Kentucky to reunite with the crew she betrayed years ago. Devising unique voices, McManus portrays the confident crew of magical criminals as they plan the heist and reconcile with Dani. When Dani goes undercover to manage the rambunctious family that owns the collection, McManus establishes an amused tone. As secrets are revealed and Dani learns the dark truth behind the art collection, McManus's tone fills with foreboding. This skill allowed her to work solo after turning in her mother and leaving her crew-turned-family 10 years ago. But an impossible job just might get her back in their good graces. She's only got to earn the trust of a billionaire, find out why her benefactor has a 100-year-old portrait, and lead her distrusting crew through a heist in less than a week. What could possibly go wrong? Bond (Mr. and Mrs. Witch) aims high by including elements of crime fiction, romance, fantasy, and self-discovery, but doesn't allow them room to breathe with such a short timeline. The result is that conclusions feel forced, especially the romantic love triangle and the family history subplot. Potential antagonists are quickly defanged, and promising side characters are underdeveloped. Narrator Shannon McManus draws listeners in with her soothing voice, but the flat, choppy delivery deflates tension. VERDICT An extraordinary premise with an average delivery. Recommended for existing Bond fans or die-hard fantasy crime lovers.--Katherine Sleyko
