McKenna delivers a satisfying modern western in this follow-up to The Last Cowboy (2011). This title focuses on Griff McPherson, a bankrupt Wall Street survivor who is trying to make a new life as a wrangler in the Wyoming town where he was born. Air-force lieutenant Val Hunter has left her career to help her grandmother keep the family ranch. After the women hire Griff, the three discover they have more work ahead of them than merely repairing fences once they become caught up in a drug-running operation that is threatening their land and safety. The romance between Griff and Val progresses slowly and sweetly, with some steam at the end. McKenna offers an enjoyable western romance with a modern twist and strong female characters who can hold their own. Fans of Linda Lael Miller's western love stories will enjoy this.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)
