Recovering from a monumental drunk in the sweat lodge of Benetsee, the local medicine man, Chappie, a decorated Iraq War veteran and shirttail relative of Gabe Du Pre, hears disturbing voices discussing a massacre of more than 30 Metis Indians sometime around 1910, possibly by a U.S. military troop commanded by Black Jack Pershing. Gabe is a descendant of that same tribe and a believer in the mystic visions that emanate from Benetsee's lodge. Gabe, Chappie, and Chappie's former commanding officer, Patchen, violate the Canadian border to find a woman rumored to be a survivor of the massacre and bring her back to see if she can locate the site of the mass killing. Naturally, border sovereignty quickly becomes an issue for Gabe's Toussaint, Montana, co-conspirators, including local law and a savvy priest; worse, there are those who don't want the past disturbed. This is the fourteenth Du Pre novel and the first in eight years, and it marks the return of a wonderfully eclectic and enjoyable series, of interest to western crime readers, especially those favoring Montana authors C.
