McKenna’s solid third Desert Dogs romantic thriller (after Give It All) sets up a maze of secrets. Casey Grossier has made mistakes in life—including some that resulted in prison time—but when his mother requires round-the-clock care for her dementia, he does his best to straighten up and fly right, helping his hardworking brother keep their family intact. Abilene Price is running from her past, trying to ensure a better life for her infant daughter. There’s lots she’s not telling her new friends in Fortuity, Nev., including her real name and history. But when Abilene’s ex is released from prison, he’s determined to find her—and the daughter he’s just found out he has. Casey and Abilene must fight tooth and nail for their budding romance and the safety of their families. McKenna creates flawed yet relatable characters, and her plotting is deft.
