When pretty Poppy Higgins's beloved mother passed away, she left her hometown of Yorkside, ME, with her two younger sisters, Daisy and Violet, staying behind to grow up with their father. When dad dies of a sudden heart attack, Poppy returns to Yorkside as the guardian of the 13- and 16-year-old girls. While Poppy struggles with being an authority figure to siblings she hasn't seen in years, feisty Daisy resents her sister's attempt to take over the parenting position. Violet, who has spent little time with her oldest sister, tries to figure out how to support Poppy in her role as provider while dealing with the death of both parents. The sisters' lives change when they meet runaway Evie, who suffered her own devastating losses and helps to bring perspective to the struggling Higgins clan. VERDICT Chamberlin's (The Family Beach House) latest is a great summer read but with substance. It will find a wide audience in its exploration of sisterhood, family, and loss.--Brooke Bolton, North Manchester P.L., IN
