Rookie SPI (Supernatural Protection & Investigation) agent Makenna Fraser and partner Ian Byrne are on duty at a museum gala, charged with guarding a collection of rare diamonds on exhibit. The gems are stolen by a trio of harpies, and two of the diamonds have powers that could mean the death of thousands of supernaturals living in New York City if the thieves can use them in a ritual at midnight on Halloween. VERDICT This follow-up to 2014's The Grendel Affair is another fun, breezy adventure that doesn't take itself too seriously. Mac is a lovable heroine--a bit green still and holding on to her folksy charm as she learns how to hold her own in the city's supernatural circles. Fans of Mur Lafferty's The Shambling Guide to New York City will probably enjoy this as well.
